American actor Bradley Whitford was born on October 10, 1959, in Madison, Wisconsin, to Genevieve Louie and George Van Norman Whitford. He graduated from Madison East High School in 1977 and earned a B.A. in English and Theater from Wesleyan University in 1981. From 1981 to 1985, Whitford studied at the Juilliard School's Drama Division as a member of Group 14. During that time, he trained extensively in classical theater and began building his professional acting career.
Whitford made his professional stage debut in Sam Shepard’s “Curse of the Starving Class,” performing alongside Kathy Bates in an Off-Broadway production at the Promenade Theater, which ran from July 30, 1985, to February 16, 1986. His notable theatrical credits also include “Three Days of Rain” at the Manhattan Theatre Club, “Measure for Measure” at Lincoln Center, and the title role in “Coriolanus” at the Folger Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C.
Whitford’s screen debut came with the television series “The Equalizer” in 1985, followed by his first film role in “Doorman” in 1986. His career accelerated with roles across both mediums. He is best recognized for playing White House Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman in Aaron Sorkin’s critically acclaimed political drama “The West Wing” (1999–2006). The collaboration between Whitford and Sorkin began when Whitford joined the Broadway cast of “A Few Good Men” in 1990 as a replacement actor.
Whitford won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2001 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in “The West Wing.” He received further Emmy nominations as well as Golden Globe nominations for the same role from 2001 to 2003. In 2015, he earned his second Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in “Transparent” (2014). That same year, he also received the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Guest Performer in a Comedy Series and the OFTA Television Award from the Online Film & Television Association for his work on “Transparent.”
In addition to his contributions to the entertainment industry, Whitford has been active in political advocacy. In May 2007, he received the Champion of Justice award from the Alliance for Justice, a nonprofit advocacy organization. The following month, he served as the speaker for Princeton University's Class Day. During the 2012 U.S. election season, he participated in campaign efforts across Ohio and Wisconsin, supporting Democratic candidates and initiatives.
Whitford married actress Jane Kaczmarek in 1992. The couple collaborated on several projects, including “Malcolm in the Middle” (2000), “RoboCop 3” (1993), “Philadelphia” (1993), and “The West Wing.” Together, they co-founded the charity “Clothes Off Our Back” in 2002, which auctioned celebrity clothing online to benefit children's charities. Until their divorce in 2009, they resided in San Marino, California, with their three children: Frances Genevieve, George Edward, and Mary Louisa.
In early 2015, Whitford began dating actress Amy Landecker, his co-star in “Transparent.”
Bradley Whitford has an estimated net worth of $9 million. Reflecting on his life, he once remarked that if he could change one thing, he would have started dancing at a younger age.
