Damian Robert Nesta "Jr. Gong" Marley was born on July 21, 1978 in Kingston, Jamaica. Damian is the youngest son of reggae legend Bob Marley, and despite he was only 2 years old when his father died, he’s totally following his footprints. Damian is very talented, and he has a versatile personality, being he a singer and a songwriter.

Damian had a serious interest in music since he was 13, when he formed the musical group “The Shephards”, together with the daughter of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_McGregor">Freddie McGregor</a>, and the son of Third World's Cat Core. The group had an initial success, getting to open the “Reggae Sunsplash” festival in 1992. But they parted apart soon after that, and Damian started his solo career.

Taking advantage of the possibility to produce music with his father’s label, Tuff Gong, he released in 1996 his first album, “Mr. Marley”. In this album surprised many of the people that already knew his music, since he was more deejaying than singing. In 2001 Damian released his second album “Halfway Tree”, under the label “Universal Motown”, and it has been a great success, that brought the singer to win the 2002 Grammy Award for the “Best Reggae Album”.

He gained even more popularity from his third studio album called “Welcome to Jamrock”, released in the USA on September 12, 2005, and subsequently released the next day in the United Kingdom. He established himself as a competitive singer by selling over 86,000 copies in his first week of release, and getting the Gold award for reaching more than 500,000 copies sold in the United States.

Among the most important songs in this album we find "The Master Has Come Back", "Road to Zion" (featuring Nas), and "Khaki Suit" (featuring <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bounty_Killer">Bounty Killer</a> and Eek-A-Mouse). The single “Welcome To Jamrock” caused many controversies in Jamaica, since the text was “the icon of the inner city, of alienation, of despair, of prejudice, but of hope, of Jamaican identity, to remind us of the fire of frustration, the fire of creativity, the fire of warning to open up our eyes and look within to the life we are living”, said the professor Clinton about it.

At the Grammy Awards of 2006, Damian won the “Best Reggae Album” and the “Best Urban/Alternative Performance” for “Welcome to Jamrock”, becoming the first Jamaican artist ever to receive two Grammies in the same night.

In 2010 Damian produced and released with Nas a collaborative album, “Distant Relatives”. This album received high level of success in the market, and also became the top-ten album in the United States. The album succeeded to get the four positions on Billboard’s Digital Albums. The album was also placed on the number one of the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

In 2011 Damian participated in an album with the group of musician superstars called “SuperHeavy”. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mick_Jagger">Mick Jagger</a>, English <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mick_Jagger">musician</a> and the lead vocalist of rock band The Rolling Stones, announced the formation of this special group of singers on May 2011. Born from <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Stewart_(musician_and_producer)">Dave Stewart</a>'s idea, SuperHeavy was inspired by the sounds washing into his home in St Ann's Bay, Jamaica: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Stewart_(musician_and_producer)">Stewart</a> urged <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mick_Jagger">Jagger</a> to fuse their sound with that of Indian orchestras. A. R. Rahman was added to the supergroup, as well as British <a href="/biography/joss-stone">singer</a> <a href="/biography/joss-stone">Joss Stone</a>. The name of the band is said to have been inspired by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali">Muhammad Ali</a>. The group began recording their self-titled debut album in early 2009 in Los Angeles. They recorded about 35 hours of music in studio, and the band played eight of the recorded songs at the “Ponder Tour in Los Angeles”.

They also released the video of this song on YouTube: it was filmed at the Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, and it featured all the five components of the band.

In 2012 Damian collaborated with the electronic <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skrillex">artist</a> <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skrillex">Skrillex</a> on a song called “Make It Bun Dem”.

In 2017 Damian released his 4th solo studio album, “Stony Hill”, that brought him to the victory of another Grammy for the “Best Reggae Album” at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.

Damian can be considered an artist that loves mixing genres: his style is a mix of dancehall and reggae, but he also fused hip hop and reggae musical elements in “Distant Relatives”. In that album we can also notice a cultural mixture between Africa, Jamaica, and United States. In an interview to “The Guardian” Damian declared “I like singing all songs, really, but I find that writing social commentary comes naturally. My father was big on that and then some, but my stepfather is a politician in Jamaica – and one of Jamaica's leading criminal defense lawyers – so I've been exposed to different ways of thinking.
