Franck Henry Pierre Ribéry (born 7 April 1983) is a retired French professional footballer best known for his time with German club Bayern Munich and the France national team. Primarily a winger, often deployed on the left despite being right-footed, Ribéry was renowned for his pace, energy, technical skill, and accurate passing. Acclaimed for his dribbling and ball control, he became one of the most influential French players of his generation. Former French football icon Zinedine Zidane once described Ribéry as the "jewel of French football."
Ribéry began his football journey in 1989 with the youth team of his hometown club Conti Boulogne. After seven years, he joined Lille's youth academy but left after three years due to adjustment difficulties. In 1999, he signed with US Boulogne, launching his senior career. He then spent two years playing for amateur sides Alès and Brest before progressing to Ligue 1 with FC Metz in 2004.
In January 2005, Ribéry transferred to Turkish club Galatasaray, where he helped win the Turkish Cup. However, his stint in Turkey was short-lived, and he left the club under controversial circumstances to return to France and join Olympique de Marseille. During his two seasons with Marseille, he was instrumental in leading the team to two consecutive Coupe de France finals.
In 2007, Ribéry moved to Bayern Munich for a then club-record transfer fee of €25 million. His time at Bayern marked the most successful chapter of his career. With the club, he won nine Bundesliga titles, six DFB-Pokal trophies, one UEFA Champions League title, and one FIFA Club World Cup. His performance in the 2012–13 season, during which Bayern achieved a historic treble, earned him a spot on the final shortlist for the 2013 FIFA Ballon d'Or alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ribéry's younger brothers, Franck and Steven, are also involved in football. Franck has played for various amateur clubs in France, including Bayonne in the Championnat National, while Steven was associated with the Bayern Munich reserve team.
Ribéry is married to Wahiba, a Frenchwoman of Algerian descent. The couple has four children: daughters Hiziya and Shahinez, and sons Salif and Mohammed. A convert to Islam, Ribéry adopted the name Bilal Yusuf Mohammed after his conversion.
Ribéry earned 81 caps for the France national team between 2006 and 2014. He represented France in two FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010) and two UEFA European Championships (2008, 2012). He made his international debut in May 2006 against Mexico, and scored his first international goal during France’s 2006 World Cup campaign in a knockout match against Spain. He also featured in the final against Italy.
Individually, Ribéry was named French Player of the Year three times and also earned the German Footballer of the Year award, becoming the first player to win both honors. He was included in the UEFA Team of the Year and had previously been named France’s Young Player of the Year. In 2013, he was awarded the UEFA Best Player in Europe and was ranked fourth on The Guardian's list of the world’s best footballers.
Franck Ribéry has an estimated net worth of $60 million. His earnings stem from a highly successful football career, endorsement deals, and salaries. At the height of his career, Ribéry earned approximately $17 million annually in base salary and an additional $1 million through endorsement deals with brands such as Nike, making him one of the 20 highest-paid footballers in the world during that period.
In April 2010, Ribéry was implicated in an investigation involving a prostitution ring operating within a Paris nightclub. French television service M6 reported that four national team members were questioned, including Ribéry and Sidney Govou. Ribéry admitted to having had a relationship with a prostitute but stated that he was unaware she was a minor at the time. The case drew considerable media attention, though no formal charges were brought against him related to knowingly engaging with an underage individual.
