Eric Marlon Bishop, professionally known as Jamie Foxx, was born on December 13, 1967, in Terrell, Texas, United States. He is a renowned actor, comedian, singer, songwriter, and producer.
Jamie was adopted shortly after birth and was raised in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Terrell. A musically gifted child, he began playing the piano at the age of five. As a teenager, he played piano and served as choir leader at Terrell’s New Hope Baptist Church. Foxx attended Terrell High School, where he excelled academically and participated in basketball and football. He later received a scholarship to United States International University (now Alliant International University), where he studied classical music and composition.
Known for his outgoing and charismatic personality, Foxx found his calling in comedy. In 1991, he joined the cast of the sketch comedy television show In Living Color, known for his portrayal of the character "Wanda." In 1992, he appeared in the TV series Roc, and in 1993, he made his film debut in the comedy Toys.
His first musical album, Peep This, was released in 1994. From 1996 to 2001, he starred in his own sitcom, The Jamie Foxx Show, which further cemented his status as an entertainer. During this period, he also appeared in films such as The Truth About Cats & Dogs and The Great White Hype (1996), followed by guest roles in television series like Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and Moesha.
In 1997, Foxx appeared in the film Booty Call, followed by The Players Club in 1998. His first major dramatic role came in 1999 with Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday, for which he received critical acclaim. He continued with roles in Bait (2000) and portrayed Drew “Bundini” Brown in Ali (2001). That year, he also hosted the MTV Video Music Awards.
Foxx’s career gained significant momentum in 2004, a pivotal year in which he starred in Breakin’ All the Rules, Collateral alongside Tom Cruise, and the biographical film Ray, where his portrayal of Ray Charles earned him widespread acclaim. In 2005, he starred in Stealth and Jarhead, and released his second studio album Unpredictable, which achieved commercial success. Roles in Miami Vice and Dreamgirls followed in 2006, and in 2007 he appeared in The Kingdom and the holiday special Elmo’s Christmas Countdown.
Foxx continued to showcase his versatility with the release of his third album, Intuition in 2008, and film performances in The Soloist and Law Abiding Citizen in 2009.
In 2010, Foxx starred in Valentine’s Day, Due Date, and I’m Still Here. He also released his fourth album, Best Night of My Life. Film roles in Rio and Horrible Bosses followed in 2011, along with a TV appearance in When I Was 17.
In 2012, he appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, followed by roles in White House Down (2013), Rio 2, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, A Million Ways to Die in the West, Horrible Bosses 2, and Annie (all in 2014). He released his fifth album, Hollywood: A Story of a Dozen Roses, in 2015. That same year and into 2017, he starred in Sleepless and Baby Driver, and joined the cast of the television series White Famous. In 2018, Foxx appeared in Robin Hood and worked on the unreleased project All-Star Weekend, which he also directed.
Throughout his career, Jamie Foxx has been recognized for both his musical talent and acting performances. In music, his accolades include the 2006 American Music Award for Favorite R&B/Soul Male Artist, and the 2009 BET Award for Best Collaboration (“Blame It” with T-Pain). He also won two Grammy Awards: one in 2006 for Best Rap Solo Performance (“Gold Digger” with Kanye West), and another in 2010 for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group (“Blame It” with T-Pain). Additional honors include multiple NAACP Image Awards and three Soul Train Awards.
For his acting, Foxx earned the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2005 for Ray, as well as a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe in the same year for the same role. He received the MTV Generation Award in 2013 and has secured multiple Black Reel Awards and NAACP Image Awards. He was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Jamie Foxx has never been married but is the father of two daughters: Corinne, born in 1994, and Annalise, born in 2009. Corinne is a model and actress who has appeared alongside her father in various public events and productions. Foxx was previously in a long-rumored relationship with actress Katie Holmes, though both maintained a private approach to their personal lives.
Foxx became the first African-American actor to be nominated for two Academy Awards in the same year—Best Actor for Ray and Best Supporting Actor for Collateral in 2005. He is also among the select few performers to win the so-called "quadruple crown" during the motion picture awards season, earning an Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award for the same role in Ray.
The name "Jamie Foxx" was chosen for both strategic and personal reasons. As a stand-up comedian early in his career, he selected “Foxx” in homage to legendary comedian Redd Foxx. He adopted the gender-neutral first name “Jamie” to capitalize on club booking patterns that often favored female performers early in the lineup.
