Her mother, Kathleen was a homemaker. Her father, Martin Holmes, was a Senior Attorney. She had one brother and three sisters. Katie started modelling at the age of 14. An agent signed her after watching her performance in the ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird,’ monologue.

Joshua Jackson, her co-star from Dawson’s creek television series, was her boyfriend. She was engaged to actor, Chris Klein in 2003. She was his girlfriend for two years before they were engaged. They broke-up in 2005, but still maintain an amicable relationship. She then started dating Tom Cruise and began her study in Scientology. Tom and Katie were married on the 18th of November, 2006, as per the ceremony of Scientology, in Italy. Katie gave birth to their daughter, Suri, in 2006. Suri, was a media favorite. She was photographed many times. Katie and Tom did well as husband and wife for five years. Suri was homeschooled due to Tom's distrust of the American Educational system.

Kati started to fear Tom’s preoccupation with Scientology. She feared that the Church of Scientology and Tom would take away her daughter. She filed for divorce in 2012. After it was announced publicly, they split on the 9th of July, 2012. Katie has the full custody of their child, who is now studying in a school in New York. This is the third time that Tom has been divorced. This is, however, the first break-up of wedlock for Katie. The reason or cause for the split has not been cheating or any affairs outside of the marriage. The odd reason for this split is the preoccupation with a certain stream of religious belief. Not all spousal relationships fail because of adultery. A few relationships break up because of different believes and orientation.

Katie started to lose her trust in Tom after she witnessed the intensity of his religious beliefs. Katie also sued a magazine for falsely accusing her of drug abuse. The Star magazine then published an apology to Katie, after the suit was settled in her favor.

Katie did not receive any prestigious awards for her performance in either television series or movies. She was only ranked as the 38th sexiest stars in 2005. She acted in many movies such as Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Phone Booth, Batman Begins, and Thank You for Smoking, Jack and Jill, etc.

She turned down the offer as a lead role for the horror television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She got her first break in a television series after she auditioned in Los Angeles. Katie and Tom seemed like they were very much in love. Tom’s famous jump on the Oprah’s couch in the Oprah Winfrey show, evince the deep love they once had. It is remarkable to know that when two people are in love, religious beliefs can interfere with their love. It solidifies the old adage that sometimes, "Love isn't enough".

Katie Holmes has now been out of the limelight for quite some time, while her ex-husband, Tom Cruise, continues to get work and stays relevant in the eyes of the media, and the fans. Some could argue that Katie Holmes was blacklisted due to her divorce with Tom Cruise, especially considering the fact that after that whole ordeal Katie Holmes pretty much disappeared from the planet and has not been in any worthwhile roles. With this fact came the rise to many speculations as to what happened, no one but Katie and Tom truly know the truth, however.
