Orlando Jones was born on April 10, 1968, in Mobile, Alabama, United States. His father was a professional baseball player who played briefly for the Philadelphia Phillies.
As a teenager, Orlando Jones attended Mauldin High School after relocating to Mauldin, South Carolina. To raise money for his junior and senior proms, he participated in various creative projects—including performing as a werewolf in a haunted house attraction. He later enrolled at the College of Charleston in South Carolina but left in 1990 to pursue a career in entertainment.
Jones co-founded a production company, Homeboy’s Productions and Advertising, with comedian Michael Fechter. The company produced several projects, most notably a McDonald's commercial featuring NBA superstar Michael Jordan. This marked a significant step in Jones’ early foray into media production and advertising.
He made his first entry into Hollywood in 1987 by contributing as a writer to the NBC sitcom A Different World. He also made a guest appearance in the show’s fifth and final season. Between 1991 and 1992, Jones wrote for several Fox television series. He also worked as a co-producer on The Sinbad Show and briefly appeared on the Fox sitcom Herman’s Head in 1992.
In 1994, Jones gained national recognition as one of the nine original cast members of the Fox sketch comedy show MADtv. Drawing from his experience in writing and comedy production, he developed and portrayed memorable characters such as Reverend LaMont Nixon Fatback and Dexter St. Croix. His impersonations included Ice Cube, Eddie Griffin, Michael Jai White, Danny DeVito, Warwick Davis, Temuera Morrison, and Thomas Mikal Ford.
After two seasons, he left MADtv to focus on a film acting career. In 2000, he returned briefly to the show for its 200th episode celebration.
In 2000, Jones became widely known as the face of 7 Up, serving as the brand’s spokesperson in a series of humorous and memorable commercials. This high-profile role significantly raised his public visibility and opened new career opportunities. The same year, he hosted HBO First Look, and in 2003, launched his own late-night talk show. Although the show had a short run, Jones continued to make television appearances, including roles in Girlfriends and The Bernie Mac Show.
Orlando Jones has built a diverse filmography, appearing in films such as Runaway Jury, Drumline, Double Take, Evolution, Biker Boyz, The Time Machine, The Replacements, Bedazzled, Magnolia, and Enemies Closer. He also had roles in lesser-known titles like Seconds Apart and Meridian. In addition to his film work, Jones has guest-starred in numerous television shows across genres.
In 2008, Orlando Jones married Jacqueline Staph, a former model. The couple welcomed their daughter in October 2011. In 2011, Jones sparked controversy after a Twitter post joking about the hypothetical death of Sarah Palin, former Governor of Alaska and 2008 vice-presidential candidate. He later issued a public apology for the comment.
Jones stands 5 feet 11 inches tall and has an estimated net worth of $3 million. Throughout his career, he has remained active in various aspects of the entertainment industry, from acting and writing to producing and advertising.
