Rob McElhenney was born in Philadelphia to Irish parents. He moved to Los Angeles at the age of 22 and was waiting tables in between landing acting jobs. There met friends Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day and developed the idea of a sitcom which became It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Although he received many offers, Rob reportedly chose FX to gain more creative freedom. All three friends star in the series and are listed as executive producers, as well.
The show brings in numerous elements of the actors' personal lives, including the prominent setting of "Patty's Pub", a Philadelphia bar which is Irish themed after Rob's heritage. Charlie's character also pines after a waitress, played by actress Mary Elizabeth Ellis, whom he is actually married to.
Rob began dating his co-star Kaitlin Olson in season two of the series and they were married on September 27, 2008. They share two sons: Axel Lee born on September 1, 2010 and Leo Grey born April 5, 2012.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has a prolific tenure of 14 years and counting, from 2004 through 2019. Rob has appeared in very few acting roles outside of his main work, but has worked on films such as Unsupervised, The Cool Kids and Spikeface in an executive producer role.
