Creation of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

While in Los Angeles, McElhenney met fellow aspiring actors Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day. The trio collaborated to create what would become the hit sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. McElhenney chose to partner with the FX network, reportedly to maintain greater creative control over the project. In addition to starring in the series, McElhenney, Day, and Howerton also serve as executive producers.

The sitcom incorporates elements of the actors' real lives. One prominent example is the setting of Paddy’s Pub, an Irish-themed bar in Philadelphia that reflects McElhenney’s heritage. Another is the relationship between Charlie's character and a waitress, portrayed by actress Mary Elizabeth Ellis—who is, in fact, married to Charlie Day in real life.

Marriage to Kaitlin Olson

During the second season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Rob McElhenney began dating his co-star Kaitlin Olson. The couple married on September 27, 2008. Together, they have two sons: Axel Lee, born on September 1, 2010, and Leo Grey, born on April 5, 2012.
