Sergio Busquets was born in 1988 in Sabadell, Barcelona, in the region of Catalonia, Spain. He began his football journey with the local team CD Badia del Vallès. His early development included stints with CEF Barberà Andalucía, UFB Jàbac Terrassa, and UE Lleida before joining FC Barcelona’s youth academy in 2005.
During his second season with Barcelona’s Juvenil A team, Busquets scored seven goals in 26 matches. His consistent performance earned him a promotion to FC Barcelona B under the supervision of then-manager Pep Guardiola. He played a key role in helping the team achieve promotion to the Spanish third division. That same season, he made his first-team debut as a substitute in a Catalonia Cup match.
Busquets made his La Liga debut in 2008, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1–1 home draw against Racing de Santander. He soon followed this with a UEFA Champions League appearance, scoring the second goal in a 5–0 group-stage victory over FC Basel at St. Jakob-Park on October 22, 2008.
That same year, Busquets signed a contract extension with FC Barcelona valid until 2013, including a buyout clause reportedly set at €80 million. In March 2009, he scored his first La Liga goal in a 2–0 home win against Athletic Bilbao.
Despite competition from established international midfielders like Yaya Touré and Seydou Keita, Busquets emerged as a first-choice defensive midfielder. He played a key role in the starting eleven during FC Barcelona’s 2–0 victory over Manchester United in the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final.
Busquets earned his first international cap with Spain’s Under-21 team in 2008 during the qualification play-offs for the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. His breakthrough into the senior national team came in 2009 when he was selected by manager Vicente del Bosque for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
He was assigned a pivotal midfield role, filling the position previously occupied by Marcos Senna. Busquets was a key member of the Spanish squad that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012. Additionally, he represented Spain in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2016. Over the course of his international career, he has earned more than 130 caps, becoming one of the most dependable players in Spain’s midfield.
Sergio Busquets is the son of former goalkeeper Carles Busquets, who also played for FC Barcelona. His mother's name is Loli Burgos, and he has one sibling, a brother named Aitor Busquets. He is in a long-term relationship with Elena Galera Morón and was previously linked to Vanessa Aguilera.
Busquets' weekly salary has been reported to be approximately $120,000, and his estimated net worth is around $45 million. Despite occasional injuries, including having to withdraw from a match for Spain, he has maintained a stable and successful football career.
