Emily Mallory Procter was born on October 8, 1968, in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. She was adopted as an infant by Barbara Jones, a volunteer worker, and William Procter, a general practitioner. Her adoptive parents divorced when she was three years old. Emily has one adopted brother named Whit.

Education

Procter graduated from Ravenscroft School in Raleigh. She later attended East Carolina University, where she earned a degree in journalism and dance. While in college, she began pursuing acting through local theater and small film roles.

Early Acting Career

Before formally studying acting, Procter landed minor roles in various films, including Jerry Maguire and Breast Men. She also took on guest roles in television, notably appearing as Lana Lang in the 1996 episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Following her graduation, she worked briefly as a weather anchor at WNCT-TV in North Carolina before fully committing to her acting career.

Breakthrough Roles in Film and Television

Procter began to gain more recognition in the late 1990s. In 1997, she appeared as Mavis in The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion! and in 1999, she portrayed Whitney Bryant in the feature film Body Shots. However, her most prominent early role came with the NBC political drama The West Wing, in which she played Ainsley Hayes, Associate White House Counsel, from 2000 to 2002 and again in 2006.

She also made a memorable guest appearance on NBC’s Friends, portraying a brief love interest of Matt LeBlanc’s character, Joey Tribbiani.
