Tahliah Debrett Barnett was born on January 16, 1988 in Cheltenham, United Kingdom. As a half-Jamaican local of Gloucestershire, Barnett grew up encompassed by farmland and was urged to study artful dance and opera by her mom, a Spanish-English salsa dancer. Given the nickname Twigs due to how uproariously she can split her bones, she started singing with a jazz band at age 13. She earned a scholarship to a private all-young ladies Catholic private school. As the first mixed race student, she often felt separated from her classmates. When she was 16, Barnett started writing melodies , taking motivation from great jazz and soul singers like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Marvin Gaye just as the post-punk and new rush of Siouxsie and the Banshees and Adam Ant.
When she was 17, Barnett moved to London to pursue a career as a dancer. As she appeared in recordings for tunes by Jessie J, Ed Sheeran, Kylie Minogue, and Taio Cruz, among others, she decided that the best path in her life would to become a professional musician. Alongside her companions CY AN and LJ Howe, she framed Delirium Tremens, a punk band in the vein of X-Ray Spex. Alongside working as a bartender, Barnett enlisted a manager who helped her interface with producers including Mike Chapman, who helped her refine her songwriting.
FKA twigs was in a relationship with actor Robert Pattinson. The pair started dating in July 2014. Afterward, they got engaged in March 2015. They were as one for a long time but eventually, they cut off their romantic association in August 2017
In 2012, Twigs self-released EP1, which included video recordings for each track that she directed. In the wake of changing her moniker to FKA twigs in line with another artist named Twigs, she came back with EP2, a striking arrangement of melodies including production from Kanye West teammate Arca. Soon thereafter, FKA twigs was nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2014 prize which Sam Smith won. EP2 was released in the U.S. There was no turning back after EP1 and EP2 made her a known name in the music industry.
In November 2019, FKA twigs performed at the Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles. The show created headlines when Drake made an unannounced appearance and got jeered by the large crowd.
