Gabriela Sabatini

Gabriela Sabatini was born on May the 16 in 1970. Her home town was Buenos Aires in Argentina. She is the daughter of Osvaldo and Beatriz Garofalo Sabatini. She has a jus sanguinis Italian citizenship. This is the former professional tennis player’s biography.

Beginnings

Her tennis career started at the early age of six. It was only two years later that she won her first tournament.

First Tournaments

At the age of thirteen she won the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida in the United States of America. That way she became the youngest player to win that tournament. She also won French Open girls' singles, among other international junior titles. In 1984 she was ranked as the World No. 1 junior player. At the age of fifteen she reached the semifinals of the French Open. In 1986, she won in Tokyo her first top level singles. Two years later she participated of the Grand Slam in the United States Open. She was able to reach the finals that time. There she lost in a match against Germany’s player Steffi Graf.

Olympiads

She represented her country, Argentina, in the Olympic Games in1988. To be more precise, she participated in the Summer Olympics that took place in Seoul that year. There she was the winner of the silver medal in the women's singles competition. She faced Steffi Graf once again in the finals. In that match her Grand Slam was nicknamed the Golden Slam by the press.

Other Tournaments

It was also in 1988 that she participated of Wimbledon, playing with Graf in the women's doubles. The same year she took home the trophy for the WTA Tour Championships. Two years later, she participated of another Grand Slam, the US Open. There she was able to beat Graf in two sets. A victory that repeated itself in the semifinal of the WTA Tour Championship. At the end she lost to Monica Seles. Then she reached her third Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon in 1991. That year she almost reach the World No. 1 ranking, but both Steffi Graf and Monica Seles were better ranked than her. She took home the trophies for four trophies that year. The following year she won five other tournaments. At the same time she was unable to get the Grand Slam Final. It seems like 1992, was not a good year. She also lost to Mary Joe Fernández in the Australian Open, and against Monica Seles in the French Open. She lost in a match against Graf in the Wimbledon Final. She then continued to play in 1993. That year she participated in the Australian Open; there she was beaten by Seles. It was also during 1993 that she made an improvement in her game as she moved forward in the Grand Slam singles events. She faced and was defeated by Jana Novotná in Wimbledon. Then she lost to Graf in the US Open. She also lost to Sánchez Vicario in the Bausch & Lomb final of that same year. It was the following year that she faced the same player in the same tournament with the same results. She finally stopped her losing streak in the 1994 WTA Tour Championships when she won a match against Lindsay Davenport. Then, the following year she faced against Mary Joe Fernández at the Sydney Open Tournament. Then in 1996 she retired after playing her last singles match and losing against Jennifer Capriati.

Recognition

It was in 1989 that she reached the third position in the World’s ranking. Years later she was named the most relevant Sportman of the decade in Argentina by the Diamond Konex Award in 2001. Five years later she was introduced to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Not much is known about her personal life. She has not celebrated her wedding yet, nor is a married woman. But if there is any candidate to becoming her husband that is her long term boyfriend Guillermo Roldan.
