Gena’s father, Edwin Myrwyn Rowlands, worked as a banker and state legislator. Her dad was a member of the Wisconsin Progressive Party and he was of Welsh descent. She had a brother named David Rowlands.
Gena’s family moved to Washington, D.C. in 1939. They had to move when her father, Edwin was delegated to a position in the United States Department of Agriculture. They made a move again in 1942 to Milwaukee, when her father was named the branch manager of the Office of Price Administration.
