George Lopez

George Edward Lopez was born on April 23, 1961 in Mission Hills, California to the Mexican family of Frieda and Anastasio Lopez. The Lopez family was always financially challenged, because his parents were Hispanic migrants. His father left the family, when George was 2. His mother died 8 years later. Luckily, George had grandma and grandpa, who did all of their best to give the boy decent education. His grandma Benita was working at the factory and his grandpa Refugio Gutierrez was a construction worker.

After the graduation from the San Fernando High School, George started performing as a stand-up comedian. In one of the Los-Angeles stand-up clubs Lopez was noticed by the club owner. Since then, he started to appear in such clubs more often and that helped him to get his audience. In 1990 he was offered a role in the “Ski Patrol”. A film was cheaply made, so there is no wonder that comedian’s popularity didn’t grow at all. Even though fame didn’t come to him at once, a Mexican guy decided to continue his attempts to become a Hollywood film star. In 1993 George was playing in “Fatal Instinct”. The film was a success - $8 million dollars was collected worldwide. It might not seem as the huge deal of money, but it was a pretty good sum for those times. George was gaining the popularity and achieved happiness in his personal life by marrying Ann Serrano. Their only daughter Mayan was born in 1995. The same year actor was offered a role in “Desperado”, but refused to play in this film. Actor’s unwillingness to take part in the film is caused by actor’s believes that such films provoke racial conflicts. He didn’t want the viewers to think about Hispanics as about the criminals and drug dealers.

George decided to come back to the stand-up comedy business, but in 1999 Lopez started working in the morning show on the radio station. By the way, he was the first Latino-American to lead the worthy show on the English-speaking radio station. Right after that, he received a role in “Bread and Roses” (2000). This film has been awarded a “Gold Palm Branch” during the Cannes Festival. In 2000, he had a life-changing conversation with Sandra Bullock, who was concerned about insufficient number of Hispanic-oriented sitcoms in television. She helped Lopez to talk the ABC channel into producing the TV show with Latino-American cast. That’s how “George Lopez” (2002-2007) show was created.

In 2004 George was diagnosed with kidneys deterioration. In 2005 he got the successful kidney transportation from his former wife Ann. This surgery caused George’s loss of 45 pounds in a matter of weeks. Unfortunately, his wife’s sacrifice didn’t help their marriage: a couple divorced in 2010. In 2006 he received a star on Hollywood’s walk of Fame.

He was featuring his own talk-show “Lopez Tonight” (2009-2011) and has founded his own philanthropic organization “The Lopez Foundation”. In 2007 Forbes reported that his net worth is approximately $27 million.
