He was the son of a teacher, Terrea who was from the United States of America and Maurice Smith who was a low budget film producer, from the United Kingdom. Smith’s father produced many films during the 1980s in which his mother, Terrea appeared. Gregory Smith has two brothers and a younger sister. Andrew and Douglas are his brothers and Samantha is his sister. Smith is called a Canadian-American actor as his a citizen of both Canada and United States but his ancestry is of mostly English and Ashkenazi Jewish.

He starred u=in a drama John Hurt and in the movie Small Solder and for this movie he had won a Young Artist Award for his Best Performance in a Feature Film Leading Young Actor in the year 1999. He also appeared in Nearing Grace which was an independent film drama.
