Harry Lloyd

Harry Lloyd, born on 17 November 1983, is an English actor best known for his roles as Will Scarlet in the 2006 BBC series Robin Hood, Jeremy Baines in the 2007 Doctor Who episodes "Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood," and Viserys Targaryen in HBO's Game of Thrones. He is a great-great-great-grandson of renowned Victorian novelist Charles Dickens.

Family Background and Heritage

Lloyd was born in London to Marion Evelyn and Jonathan Lloyd. His father, Jonathan, ran a literary agency. Through his mother, he descends from a line notable for literary and naval contributions; she is the daughter of Captain Peter Dickens of the Royal Navy. Lloyd’s great-grandfather, Rear-Admiral Henry Blagrove, also served in the British Navy. He shares familial ties with writer and biographer Lucinda Hawksley and actor Gerald Dickens, both of whom are also descendants of Charles Dickens.

Harry Lloyd Education

Harry Lloyd was educated at Eton College. At age 16, he made his television debut playing James Steerforth in the BBC's 1999 adaptation of David Copperfield. In 2002, he appeared as Rivers in the television version of Goodbye Mr. Chips. He later studied English at Christ Church, University of Oxford, where he became involved in the Oxford University Dramatic Society. During his time at Oxford, he performed in several stage productions, including Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Comedy of Errors. He graduated with an upper second-class degree in 2005.

Harry Lloyd Career

In 2007, Lloyd appeared in Neil LaBute’s Bash: Latterday Plays at Trafalgar Studios, where he performed in the segment A Gaggle of Saints, receiving positive critical reviews. That same year, he portrayed Jeremy Baines, a schoolboy possessed by an alien entity, in the Doctor Who episodes "Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood."

In 2011, Lloyd gained international recognition for his portrayal of Viserys Targaryen in the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. He also appeared in the BBC satire Taking The Flak and played Herbert Pocket in the BBC adaptation of Great Expectations. His other credits include small roles in the films Jane Eyre and The Iron Lady. In 2012, he starred in the Channel 4 crime drama The Fear and took on the role of Ferdinand in a stage adaptation of The Duchess of Malfi at the Old Vic in London. He later portrayed Brian, a friend and colleague of Stephen Hawking, in the Oscar-winning biopic The Theory of Everything (2014), which starred Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones.
