Howie Long's full name is Howard Matthew Moses Long, and he was born in 1960. A former National Football League (NFL) defensive end, Long is also known for his work as an actor. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000 and currently serves as a studio analyst for NFL coverage on Fox Sports Network.
Howie Long attended Milford High School in Milford, Massachusetts, where he excelled as an all-around athlete. He participated in football, track, and basketball and is an inductee of the school's Hall of Fame. Prior to that, he briefly attended Christopher Columbus High School.
Long went on to play college football at Villanova University, earning a degree in communications. A four-year letterman, he appeared in the Blue-Gray Football Classic and was named the game's MVP in 1980. His college career was marked by significant achievements: as a freshman, he recorded 99 tackles; during his sophomore year, he added five sacks and 78 tackles. Although he missed three games in the 1979 season due to a thigh injury, he still managed over 46 tackles.
In his senior year, Long led the Wildcats with four sacks and 84 tackles. Initially playing tight end, he transitioned to the defensive line and eventually became a nose guard, later settling into the defensive end position. He earned All-East honors and received an honorable mention in the All-American selections. In addition to football, Long competed in boxing and was the Northern Collegiate Heavyweight Boxing Champion while at Villanova.
Long was selected in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. Wearing jersey number 75, he spent his entire 13-year professional career with the team, which later became the Los Angeles Raiders. Known for his blend of speed, strength, and size, he became a dominant force on the defensive line. His on-field performance earned him multiple Pro Bowl selections and solidified his reputation as one of the top defensive ends of his era.
In an interview with Football Digest early in his career, Long expressed his aspirations for financial security and a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame—goals he ultimately achieved. His combination of athletic ability and determination made a lasting impact on the NFL.
