J Balvin  biography

J Balvin is a Colombian singer who was born on May 7, 1985, in Medellin, Colombia, to a middle-class family. He grew up listening to music by rock bands Metallica and Nirvana. Balvin also became a fan of reggaeton after hearing Daddy Yankee and says the sound of his music was influential in his developing his own own style. When he was 17, Balvin participated in an English-exchange program in the Oklahoma, United States. He went on to move to New York City to continue his education. While studying music and English he lived with his aunt on Staten Island. Balvin worked as a dog walker while finishing school and he was also inspired by the business sense of New York rappers 50 Cent and P. Diddy. He eventually decided to return to Colombia with the education he received and began performing at nightclubs in Medellin.

Balvin went on to attend the EAFIT University where he studied international business for seven semesters. When he turned 19, he decided to quit school and return to his music career. His big break came in February of 2014 when he released the single "6 AM" which featured Puerto Rican singer Farruko and went on to reach the number 2 spot on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart.
