Ja Rule is the stage name of Jeffrey Atkins, born on February 29, 1976, in Queens, New York. He was raised by his mother, Debra Atkins, a healthcare worker, along with his grandparents. During his early childhood, his mother experienced the tragedy of a stillborn child when Ja Rule was five years old. He attended Public School 134 in Queens. Over the course of his career, Ja Rule has released several hit albums that contributed to his recognition in the hip-hop and rap scenes.
Ja Rule began his music career in 1993, forming the hip-hop group Cash Money Click alongside Chris Black and O-1. His first recorded appearance came in 1995 on the track "Time to Build," which also featured Jay-Z, DMX, and Mic Geronimo. Though his early years in music met moderate success, they helped establish his presence in the rap community.
In 1998, Ja Rule signed a deal with Irv Gotti’s Murder Inc. Records (known then as The Inc. Records). He released his debut album, Venni Vetti Vecci, in 1999. Ja Rule's second album, Rule 3:36, released on October 10, 2000, marked a significant commercial success. It debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 and sold 276,000 copies in its first week. The album was certified triple platinum and spawned hit singles such as “Put It on Me,” which peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped MTV’s video countdown.
His third studio album, Pain Is Love, was released in 2001. It included three Top 10 singles and earned a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 2002 Grammy Awards. This record solidified his standing as a prominent figure in early 2000s hip-hop.
