The nanotechnology specialist James M. Tour was born in 1959 in New York City. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Syracuse University and went on to complete his Ph.D. in synthetic organic and organometallic chemistry at Purdue University.
Dr. Tour is renowned for his groundbreaking research in nanotechnology, particularly in nanoelectronics and carbon nano-vectors. His work spans several domains, including the development of environmentally friendly green carbon technologies for enhanced oil recovery and carbon capture, water splitting for hydrogen production, and advanced methods of water purification. Additionally, he has contributed to national defense by innovating chemical-resistant materials designed to protect against potential chemical threats.
Deeply committed to science education, Dr. Tour has actively developed programs to foster an engaging and innovative learning environment for children. He created Nanokids, a set of interactive DVDs designed to teach basic principles of chemistry and physics through animated molecules. He also introduced “NanoCars,” molecular machines conceptualized both for research and as educational tools. In line with this initiative, he helped design a “Guitar Hero Science” kit, integrating science concepts into popular gaming formats to make learning more accessible and enjoyable for students.
One of his most successful educational programs, SciRave, has been widely adopted in Texas and has reached over one million downloads. This initiative is currently utilized by more than 40,000 teachers, significantly broadening its impact on students’ science literacy across the state.
Dr. Tour served as a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of South Carolina for 11 years. In 1999, he joined Rice University’s Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology, where he continues to lead advanced research in materials chemistry and nanotechnology.
