Early Life and Family

Jason Bateman is an American actor, director, and producer, born on January 14, 1969, in Rye, New York. When he was four years old, his family relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah. He has an older sister and three half-brothers. His mother, Victoria Elizabeth, was a former Pan Am flight attendant, while his father, Kent Bateman, is a director, actor, and writer involved in the film industry.

In July 2001, Jason Bateman married Amanda Anka, the daughter of singer Paul Anka. The couple has two daughters: Francesca Nora and Maple Sylvie.

Career Beginnings and Early Television Roles

Bateman began his career in a Golden Grahams cereal commercial in 1980. He gained early recognition for his role as James Cooper Ingalls on “Little House on the Prairie,” and later portrayed Derek Taylor in the sitcom “Silver Spoons” from 1982 to 1984. He also appeared in minor television roles, including a guest spot on the third season of “Knight Rider.”

In 1984, he starred in the NBC sitcom “It’s Your Move” as Matthew Burton, a role he held until 1985. Notably, at the age of 18, Bateman became the youngest-ever director in Directors Guild of America history by directing three episodes of “The Hogan Family,” in which he also starred.

Television Work and Breakthrough with Arrested Development

Throughout the 1990s, Bateman continued acting in television series such as “Simon,” “Chicago Sons,” “George & Leo,” and “Some of My Best Friends.” He also co-starred in the TV movie “Can You Feel Me Dancing?” alongside his sister, Justine Bateman; the film was co-produced by their father, Kent Bateman. In 1999, he directed an episode of the series “Two of a Kind.”

Bateman’s career took a major turn when he was cast as Michael Bluth in the critically acclaimed comedy series “Arrested Development,” which premiered in 2003. Although the show struggled with ratings and was canceled in 2006, it earned Bateman several awards, including a Golden Globe, and a 2005 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. The series was revived by Netflix in 2013, resulting in further critical acclaim and another Emmy nomination for Bateman.

In 2010, Bateman co-founded DumbDumb Productions with his “Arrested Development” co-star Will Arnett, focusing on digital content and branded entertainment.
