After high school, Jim joined to Professional Writing Department at the University of Oklahoma for getting knowledge in the art of writing novels. He graduated from University with a degree in English Literature. When he was 19 years old he wrote his first novel, which according to him was truly awful. Then he wrote two more novels which again failed live up to the standards. This early works were part of his writing class project. Jim with the moniker of "Longshot" goes in a number of online locales in the early 1990′s when he decided to become a published author. The writing process gave to him a little experience so he decides to rewrite his first novel. Soon he creates a Harry Dresden, the main character of his novel “Dresden Files”. He finally established himself as an accomplished author and after a series of rejection from agents and editors, "Dresden Files" got published by "Roc Books" in 2000. Currently there have been 15 Dresden novels written and published in the series.

After his first novel, the readers find his writings intriguing and a lot fascinating. The next traditional fantasy fiction project titled "The Codex Alera". The events of the book take place in the Calderon Valley of Alera and narrate the story in the life of a young man Tavi. The first novel in the series was published in 2004 entitled, "Furies of Calderon". Butcher signed a deal for writing a trilogy, but then wrote 3 more books for the series. The next three novels climbed the New York Times Best Seller list. Jim Butcher has signed a deal to write a trilogy entitled "The Cinder Spires". Opposite his big series Butcher also wrote a few short stories pertaining to the same genre include "Welcome to the Jungle" "Even Hand" "Curses", "Bigfoot on Campus" and "Bombshells".

Currently Jim Butcher is also a martial arts enthusiast with experience in various styles including Ryukyu Kempo, Tae Kwon Do, Gojo Shorei Ryu, and a sprinkling of Kung Fu. He also has worked as a summer camp horse wrangler and performed in front of large audiences in both drill riding and stunt riding exhibitions.
