Joanna Lumley biography

Joanna Lumley is and English actress, author, and activist best known for her portrayal of Patsy Stone in the BBC comedy Absolutely Fabulous. Joanna Lumley was born on May 1, 1946, in Kashmir, India; her father was a major in the Gurkha Rifles and Joanna spent much of her early childhood living in the Far East. Joanna began her career as a model and was photographed by many of the world’s best photographers including her friend, Patrick Lichfield.

Her breakthrough role as an actress cam in 1976 when she was cast in the film The Avengers. Lumley achieved near instant fame and her hairstyle, known as the Purdey bob (after her Avengers character name), became one of the most popular hairstyles of the 1970’s. Her portrayal of the hard drinking, drug taking, and cigarette smoking Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous (1992) is regarded as one of the greatest female comic performances ever and has earned her many awards. Joanna Lumley is now a vegetarian and animal rights activist. Joanna Lumley has one child, a son named James, who was born in 1967. James father is the photographer Michael Claydon. Lumley has been married twice, briefly in 1970 to actor Jeremy Lloyd, and then again, in 1986, to the conductor Stephen Barlow, with whom she now lives in London.
