Joe Pavelski was born on July 11, 1984, in Plover, Wisconsin, United States, to parents Mike and Sandy Pavelski. He has three siblings—Sheri, Scott, and Jerry. From a young age, Joe showed a strong interest in athletics and developed a particular passion for ice hockey, which became a natural choice given Wisconsin’s long winters. Pavelski’s professional career took off when he was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, selected 205th overall in the seventh round. He made his NHL debut in the 2006–07 season and quickly made an impact, scoring 7 goals in his first 12 games.
His skillful play and on-ice awareness drew comparisons to veteran teammate Joe Thornton—nicknamed "Jumbo Joe." In response, Sharks announcer Randy Hahn affectionately dubbed Pavelski "Little Joe."
