In August 2016, Meehan attempted to kidnap Terra Newell, the daughter of his then-current wife, Debra Newell, in a parking lot in Newport Beach, California. He was found carrying a "kidnap kit" that included duct tape and knives when he ambushed her. However, Terra fought back during the attack and stabbed Meehan multiple times in self-defense. He succumbed to his injuries days later at the hospital at age 57.
John Meehan's story gained widespread attention through the popular podcast and later television series titled Dirty John, which detailed his criminal history and manipulation of women. His case has since been referenced in discussions surrounding coercive control, domestic abuse, and psychological manipulation in relationships.
