Jorja Smith is an English singer and songwriter who was born on June 11, 1997, in Walsall, West Midlands, England. Smith was born to a Jamaican father named Peter and an English mother named Jolene. She grew up with a younger brother named Lucca and began taking piano lessons when she was just eight-years-old. She wrote her first song when she was just 11. By age 15, Smith was noticed by a talent manager after she uploaded her singing various cover songs to YouTube.
Her music career began quickly taking off and she was soon traveling between London to write with Maverick Sabre and Ed Thomas. After graduating high school, Smith moved full time to London where she worked as a barista and kept writing music. She released her debut single in January of 2016 called "Blue Lights". The song was released on SoundCloud where it received over 400,000 plays in a single month. Smith went on to perform on Drake's Boy Meets World Tour in 2017.
