Early Life

Mixon was born on March 30, 1981, and nurtured in the Florida city of Pensacola, where she is the youngest of seven siblings. She obtained her bachelor's degree from the Pensacola Private School of Liberal Arts after attending the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, Alabama. Her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drama from the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama was her first major accomplishment.

What's impressive about Katy's family is that she grew up with six siblings, as her parents both had children of their own from previous marriages. With parents who are no strangers to performing, her mother came just shy of being crowned Miss Louisiana, and her father was once in a band; it is no surprise that many of Katy's siblings have chosen to follow a creative path as well. "We're the Von Trapp family singers," she jokes.

Career

It was in 2001 that she made her professional acting debut as Calpurnia in a Utah Shakespearean Festival production of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Mixon went to Los Angeles in 2003. A more substantial role was played by Mixon as Jon Favreau's younger wife in the comedy Four Christmases, which came out in 2008. The Informers, State of Play, and All About Steve were all hits in 2009, and she also starred in a number of more minor roles in other films. As of April Buchanon in the HBO baseball comedy series Eastbound & Down, she co-starred alongside Danny McBride for three seasons from 2009 to 2013.

Swoosie Kurtz and Melissa McCarthy co-starred in CBS sitcom Mike & Molly in 2010, and Mixon played Victoria Flynn in the same show the following year.

Vanity Fair called her character's appearance on the show "the funniest part." When the show ended in 2016, there were six seasons and 127 episodes. After her stint on Mike & Molly, Mixon starred opposite Jessica Chastain, and Michael Shannon in the critically acclaimed independent drama film Take Shelter. In 2011, the film was released to the general public. She appears in Drive Angry (2011), starring Nicolas Cage, and she also gave the voice of Tina Nelson in the animated picture Minions (2015). When Hell or High Water was published in 2016, she played alongside Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine in the critically acclaimed crime film.

In 2016, she had her first starring role in a television show, American Housewife, created by Sarah Dunn and starred Mixon.
