Lori Petty was born October 14, 1963 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She worked as a graphic designer for several years before pursuing acting. She traveled to New York to study before ultimately landing herself in Los Angeles. In 1990 she performed in Cadillac Man. Her "big break", however, was the role of Patrick Swayze's ex-girlfriend alongside Keanu Reeves in Point Break in 1991. The following year she was cast as Kit Keller in A League of Their Own along with Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, and Madonna. She continued to appear in films such as Free Willy and In the Army Now. She then moved on to voice acting, lending her voice to Superman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures. She also narrated three Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich: One for the Money, Two for the Dough, and Three to Get Deadly. In 2002 she voiced Livewire in the Superman: Shadow of Apokolips video game.
She directed The Poker House, a film based on her own childhood, as her directorial debut. The film won awards at the Los Angeles Film Festival. She appeared in popular Television shows such as NYPD Blue in 2003, House in 2008-2009, and Prison Break in 2009. She had a recurring role as Lolly Whitehill on Orange is the New Black from 2014-2018.
