Madison Bumgarner was born in 1989 in Hickory, North Carolina. He grew up nearby in an area known informally as "Bumtown," named after the many Bumgarner families in the region, whose ancestry traces back to Germany. Raised in a log home by his father Kevin Bumgarner, he often slept in a loft overlooking the rest of the house. Madison’s first word was reportedly "ball," reflecting his early affinity for sports. At just four years old, he began playing in a local youth baseball league—two years earlier than the permitted age group—after his father signed a waiver on his behalf.
