Born in Kolkata, India, Mallika Kapur studied at the Brown University situated in USA. She received her Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and later did her masters in Broadcast Journalism at the Graduate School of Journalism situated in New York. She has a younger brother Nikhil Kapur. She initially interned at the Statesman Newspaper in Kolkata.

After doing her internship in Kolkata, Kapur worked at CNBC Asia in its Singapore bureau for one and a half years and also in New York. She joined CNN in the year 2001 as assistant producer. She started working as correspondent for CNN in the year 2002. She was in charge of reporting business, market, and current affairs in Europe region. She was later promoted as producer and reporter. She worked as reporter at the London bureau of CNN for eight years before she moved to Mumbai. She is in the CNN feature programs including the Eco Solutions and CNN Business Traveller. She also worked on the show ‘Eye on India’. She has produced live news shows for CNN Today, Business International, and World Business Today at CNN.

Notable Assignments

Kapur has reported on the Commonwealth Games in India, the Indian visit of President Barack Obama, the introduction of the new symbol for Indian rupee, and the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. She has done in-depth coverage on the financial market position in India and also did news stories for the CNN special show ‘India Means Business’. She has also reported on environmental stories like the growth of the electric cars, the significance of organic farming, and employing solar technology in rural areas. She has done extensive reporting on the Asian Tsunami travelling to the remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands situated in India. She also reported on the effects of the 2006 rail bombings in Mumbai and the London bombings in the year 2005.

Kapur has come a long way from being an assistant producer at CNN to correspondent and anchor in the network reporting on a wider range of topics including business and current affairs both in its London quarters and also while based in Mumbai. She also did a brief stint at the Hong Kong bureau of CNN. Her field experience also includes reporting on the Iceland NATO council meeting in 2002 and the Geneva International Telecom fair in 2003.
