Sarah Margaret Qualley was born on October 23, 1994, in Montana. She is the daughter of actress and former model Andie MacDowell and Paul Qualley, a former model, musician, contractor, and rancher. Her sister, Rainey Qualley, is also involved in the entertainment industry as an actress, singer, and model.

Margaret began her training in classical ballet at the American Ballet Theatre and later attended the French Academy in New York. She also studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Initially focused on dance, she eventually shifted her interest to acting and took part in the summer program at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She also briefly attended New York University before pursuing acting full time.
