Matt Murray is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender, born on May 25, 1994, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. His father, originally from Scotland, passed away in January 2018, while his mother is from the Netherlands. Murray grew up in Thunder Bay and developed his early hockey skills with the Thunder Bay Minor Hockey Association.

He began playing at the AA level before advancing to the Thunder Bay Kings AAA program. During the 2009–2010 season, Murray and the Kings competed in the OHL Cup, achieving a 3-2-0 record. His performance helped him gain recognition, leading to his selection in the second round of the 2010 OHL Priority Selection.
Major Junior Career with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds
Following his draft selection, Murray joined the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He played major junior hockey with the team, honing his skills and solidifying his status as a top goaltending prospect. His development in the OHL set the stage for his professional career.
Professional Debut and Career with the Pittsburgh Penguins
On September 4, 2013, Matt Murray signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He made his National Hockey League (NHL) debut on December 19, 2015, in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes, which ended in a 2-1 loss for the Penguins.
Murray made his NHL playoff debut the following year in a game against the New York Rangers, where the Penguins secured a 3-1 victory. He quickly rose to prominence as a starting goaltender and played a key role in the team's success during the postseason.
