Matt Murray is a Canadian professional ice hockey who was born on May 25, 1994, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. His father was from Scotland and died on in January of 2018 and his other is from the Netherlands. He spent his early years growing up in Thunder Bay, Ontario where he played hockey with the Thunder Bay Minor Hockey Association. He first played AA before moving up to the Thunder Bay Kings AAA program. In his 2009 to 2010 minor season, Murray and the Kings set a 3-2-0 record at the OHL Cup resulting in his being selected in the 2nd round of the 2010 OHL Priority Selection. Murray went on to sign a three-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on September 4, 2013, but wouldn't make his National Hockey League debut until December 19, 2015, in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes which resulted in a 2-1 loss. The following year, Murray made his NHL playoff debut in a match against the New York Rangers which Pittsburgh Penguins beat by 3-1. He went on to represent Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey as a starting goalie but broke his hand in a game against Russia. In 2016, Murray won his first Stanley Cup as the starting goalie for the Penguins. The following year he won his second Stanley Cup making him the first goaltender in NHL history to win two Stanley Cup titles as a rookie.
