Matt was born on the 9th of March, 1980 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States of America. He was born as one of the three children born to mother Marilyn, who worked as a political consultant and his father John Gubler, worked as an attorney. He had a very simple childhood and was into sketching/ painting from a very young age. When he first started out in school, he was selected into acting because of his good looks and later developed a deep interest in it. He graduated from Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, where he majored in acting. Wanting to learn direction and film making, he got into the New York University and studied at its Tisch School of the Arts. During his time there, he was spotted by a modeling company and worked as a scout for DNA Model Management. Working under some top designers; Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger and company like American Eagle, he was listed in the 46th number of top 50 list of male models. He also attended the University of California, Santa Cruz before starting his career.

His first acting role came via his modeling career, and his first ever role came in the movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. This role was the first step as for the next time, he appeared in Criminal Minds in 2005. Subsequently, he filled what was needed for the role and was labeled as a fine actor. Thus, he started to gain roles in one after another projects like in RV (2006), Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007), Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (2011), Jason Lee (Dave), How to Be a Serial Killer (2008) and Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur (2011). With his voice also being lend in some animated movies, he also has a career as a film maker and has directed as well as produced some documentary movies like Matthew Gray Gubler's Life Aquatic Intern Journal, Matthew Gray Gubler: the Unauthorized Documentary etc. Likewise, he also shot and edited the music video of "Don't Shoot Me Santa" by band The Killers. He also shot eight different episodes in Criminal Minds and has also shot “behind the scenes” of some projects that he has worked in.
