Megyn Kelly was born on November 18, 1970, to Linda and Edward Kelly in Syracuse, New York. Raised in a Roman Catholic household, she spent her early years in Syracuse before the family moved to Albany when her father took a position at the State University of New York at Albany, where he worked as a professor. Her mother was a homemaker.
Kelly attended Tecumseh Elementary School in DeWitt and later enrolled at Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar, a suburb of Albany. Tragically, she lost her father at the age of 15. Despite the personal setback, she pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from Syracuse University. She went on to receive a Juris Doctor degree from Albany Law School in 1995.
Megyn Kelly began her legal career as an associate at the law firm Bickel & Brewer LLP. During her time in law school, she developed a strong interest in writing and contributed to legal publications, including work for the American Bar Association. One of her notable contributions was assisting in drafting an article titled "The Conflicting Roles of Lawyer as Director."
Kelly later joined the international law firm Jones Day, where she worked for nine years. Her legal career, particularly in corporate litigation, laid the foundation for her analytical skills, which would later benefit her in the field of journalism.
In 2003, Kelly made a career shift to journalism when she moved to Washington, D.C. She began working as a general assignment reporter for WJLA-TV, an ABC affiliate. Her reporting focused on both local and national news events, often covering legal and justice-related issues. Her coverage during this period earned her recognition for strong, clear reporting.
In 2004, Kelly joined Fox News Channel, where she quickly advanced. She contributed to the legal segments on “Special Report with Brit Hume” and eventually hosted her own segment, “Kelly’s Court.” Her incisive legal commentary and confident on-air presence made her a regular figure on several political and legal programs across the network.
Kelly garnered national attention in 2013 after making controversial comments during a segment about Santa Claus, sparking widespread media debate. The controversy was short-lived, and she continued to maintain a prominent public profile. In 2015, as one of the moderators of the Republican presidential primary debate, she questioned then-candidate Donald Trump about his temperament and controversial statements, drawing both praise and criticism.
Her growing influence in media was affirmed when she was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2014. She also appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair, further solidifying her status as a major television journalist and media personality.
