Mehcad Brooks is an American actor and former fashion model, widely recognized for his portrayal of Matthew Applewhite on the hit television series Desperate Housewives.
Mehcad Jason McKinley Brooks was born in 1980 in Austin, Texas. He is the son of Alberta Phillips, an editorial writer for the Austin American-Statesman, and Billy Brooks, a former professional football player. His stepfather, Gary Bledsoe, is a civil rights attorney and president of the Texas NAACP.
Brooks developed an interest in acting at a young age. He attended L.C. Anderson High School in Austin before enrolling at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinema-Television in 1999. He reportedly turned down scholarship offers from Ivy League universities to attend USC, choosing to pursue his passion for film and television. After college, he began seriously pursuing a career in the entertainment industry.
Before transitioning into acting full-time, Mehcad Brooks worked as an underwear model for Calvin Klein, gaining early recognition in the fashion world. His breakthrough acting role came in 2005 when he was cast as Matthew Applewhite in the second season of ABC’s Desperate Housewives.
