Michael Bivins

While Bivins enjoyed performing on stage in front of live audiences, Bivins equally liked being behind the scenes and played an active role in managing New Edition. His passion led to him starting his own record label, Biv 10 Records, in the early 1990s, in conjunction with Motown Records. Bivins signed some well-known bands to his record label including 702, ABC (Another Bad Creation), and Boyz II Men, who got their name from a song on New Edition’s 1988 album Heart Break. Boyz II Men became one of the biggest-selling R&B acts of the 1990s, with hit songs including “End of the Road” and “I’ll Make Love to You.”

In addition to his work for the record industry, Bivins has produced music for a number of TV shows and movies. His credits include music production for Full House, 40 Days and 40 Nights, Tropic Thunder, and Beverly Hills. He was also an actor, with his debut role coming in a small part in the movie Friday After Next, in 2002. He has also appeared in the basketball movie Crossover. He also made an appearance as a DJ in the video game Grand Theft Auto.

Recognition

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Walk of Famer Vin Di Bona announced on June 28, 2016 that New Edition would be inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The group shared the honor along with Ice Cube, ‘NSYNC, Clarence Avant, John Legend, and the late Selena.

In August 2015, the cable network Black Entertainment Television (BET) announced that New Edition would be the subject of an upcoming mini-series documenting their careers and rise to stardom. Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, and Bobby Brown all signed up to be co-producers. New Edition’s longtime manager Brooke Payne has also been signed up as a co-producer of the series. Jesse Collins Entertainment, whose credits include “Real Husbands of Hollywood,” was chosen as the executive producer with New Edition Enterprises.

The miniseries was the first scripted made-for-TV movie about musicians to air on BET. Abdul Williams, who wrote the screenplay for the 2010 movie Lottery Ticket, wrote the script.
