He's parent were social and factory workers respectively, they all moved in from Mexico and he was originally from Villa Purification, Jalisco. His mother is from Charcas, San Luis Potosi. Pena has become a household name in the entertainment industry, he has featured in blockbuster movies like Ant Man, The Martian, Fury.
He career started booming when he played part in the film Million Dollar baby in 2004, the film was an Oscar winning film also he was popular for his involvement in the film Crash.
Later that years he took part in the series The Shields.
In 2006 he was in an Oliver Stone based film titled World Trade Centre, the film was centres round the events in America that happened on September 2001. He also played part in the film Babel. He co-starred with Mark Wahlberg in the 2007 film Shooter, he played the role of a novice FBI agent.
As of 2006, he played Sal Castro a Mexican- American high school teacher in the HBO film Walkout.
He also worked with Seth Rogen in the film Observe and Report.
In 2012 he co-starred with Jake Gyllenhaal in the film End of Watch. In 2014 he was in the film Fury and as of 2015 he played Luis in the super hero comedy movie Ant-Man.
He was in the animated movie chozen, which was an animated comedy.
Aside from being an actor he's also a musician he formed the rock band Nico Vega in 2005 and has released songs from the band, he co wrote the song Beast. All through his career he has featured in numerous movies and TV shows
