In 2007, he co-starred with Mark Wahlberg in Shooter, portraying a novice FBI agent. He also portrayed Sal Castro, a Mexican-American high school teacher and activist, in the HBO film Walkout (2006).

Peña continued his success with comedic and dramatic roles, including a performance opposite Seth Rogen in Observe and Report (2009), and a co-starring role with Jake Gyllenhaal in the gritty police drama End of Watch (2012).
