It was speculated that the producers of the show wanted him on the show because of how much he looked to the film version of his character.
Besides his famous run on Stargate, Michael is also famous for playing Dr. Charles Harris on the Canadian medical drama, Saving Hope.

Michael has been married to his loving wife, Lexa Doig since August 2, 2003. They have two wonderful children that they raise together. Michael was previously in a committed relationship with a woman named Vaitiare Hirshon. He had a daughter with her named Vaitiare Hirshon. She was born in 1998 and is Michael’s oldest child.
