Early Life and Education

Michelle Kosinski was born on May 6, 1974, and raised in Cinnaminson Township, New Jersey, near Philadelphia. She graduated as class valedictorian from Holy Cross High School. From a young age, Kosinski was actively involved in the arts, training in classical ballet, participating as a cheerleader, and pursuing creative writing.

She attended Northwestern University, enrolling in an accelerated program that allowed her to earn both a Bachelor's and a Master’s degree. Initially beginning her studies in a magazine writing program, she later shifted her focus to broadcast journalism. While at Northwestern, she performed with the Northwestern University Dance Ensemble (NUDE), continuing her involvement in ballet both on campus and in the surrounding community.

Kosinski is engaged to Kimbell Duncan, a retired investment banker and current manager of the Rush Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to promoting more effective strategies to combat the spread of HIV in Africa, particularly in sub-Saharan regions.

Broadcast Journalism Career

Michelle Kosinski began her career in broadcast journalism at WIFR in Rockford, Illinois. She then joined WSOC-TV in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she was instrumental in establishing the station's Piedmont Bureau. In 2001, she moved to Miami to work for WTVJ, an NBC affiliate.

Her growing reputation led to her appointment in 2010 as a foreign correspondent for NBC News. She relocated from the network's Southeast Bureau to its international base in London. In this role, Kosinski covered a wide array of significant global events.

Major News Assignments

Kosinski has reported on numerous major national and international events. These include the 2007 assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the poisoning of former Russian agent Alexander Litvinenko, as well as multiple terrorist threats and attacks across Europe. Domestically, she covered the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the collapse of a mine in Utah, and the Virginia Tech shootings.

Her foreign dispatches also covered the aftermath of the 2010 earthquakes in Chile and Haiti, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and the high-profile legal proceedings involving Joran van der Sloot. During her time at WSOC-TV and WTVJ, she was known for long-form investigative reporting, adding depth and context to complex issues.

Awards and Recognition

Michelle Kosinski has received multiple honors for her journalistic work. While at WTVJ-NBC 6 in Miami, she earned an Emmy Award for her reporting on immigration issues. In 2005, the South Florida Women in Communications Organization named her Woman of the Year. Earlier in her career, while based in Charlotte with WSOC-TV, she was voted Best Reporter in the city by readers of a prominent local arts and entertainment magazine.
