Mickie James is an American professional wrestler, country singer, and model who was born on August 31, 1979, in Richmond, Virginia, to Stuart James and Sandra Knuckles. Her father is a retired wastewater-treatment worker and her mother is a teacher and real-estate agent. James has a sister, a half-sister, a half-brother, and three stepbrothers. Her parents divorced when she was young and she grew up in Montpelier, Virginia where she spent a lot of time on her grandmother's horse farm. She had an interest in equestrian sports and played violent for five years. James graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1997 and went on to attend a professional wrestling school in Washington D.C. She debuted in the independent circuit in 1999 as a valet for KYDA Pro Wrestling under the ring name of Alexis Laree. She trained at a variety of camps to improve her wrestling ability before taking a job at NWA: Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.
In August of 2003, James signed a developmental contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). She won her first WWE Women's Championship at WrestleMania 22, a title which she successfully held five times. James became engaged to fellow wrestler Kenny Dykstra in 2007 and were married on December 31, 2015, after having their first child, a boy named Donovan Patrick Aldis.
