Michael William Gatting, commonly known as Mike Gatting, was born on 6th June 1957 in Kingsbury, England. Nicknamed "Gatt" by his family, he went on to become one of England’s most recognized cricketers during the 1980s and early 1990s.
Mike Gatting began his first-class cricket career in 1975 with Middlesex County Cricket Club. He remained a consistent performer for the club until his retirement in 1998. Known for his right-handed batting and occasional medium-pace bowling, he played a pivotal role in many of Middlesex's successes during his tenure.
Gatting’s consistent performances at the county level eventually earned him a spot on the England national team. He represented England in 79 Test matches and 92 One Day Internationals (ODIs). He captained the national side in 23 Tests, including the Ashes series in 1986–87, where he led England to a memorable victory in Australia. He also captained the side during the 1987 Cricket World Cup, guiding the team to the final.
Despite his stocky build, he was widely regarded as one of the finest batsmen of his era. His strong and effective batting was admired by fans across the world. Gatting scored a double century (207) in Madras (now Chennai) during the 1984–85 tour of India. He followed that with other notable innings, including 160 against Australia in 1985 and 183 against India in 1987.
