Nancy Ticotin was born on September 4, 1957, in New York City, New York, to Iris Torres and Abe Ticotin. She was raised in a middle-class family in the Bronx, a borough known for its rich Puerto Rican community. Her mother, Iris Torres, was a Puerto Rican educator, and her father, Abe Ticotin, was a Russian-Jewish used car salesman.

Nancy received her primary and secondary education in the Bronx. She was previously married to director and producer Mitchell Maxwell, though the marriage ended in divorce.
