Nyle DiMarco is an American model, actor, and deaf activist. Born on May 8, 1989, into a multigenerational deaf family, he has embraced his identity and used it as a platform to educate and empower the deaf community. DiMarco considers himself fortunate to have been raised with a deep understanding of deaf culture and the determination to succeed, setting a valuable example for others facing similar challenges.
Nyle DiMarco was born to Donna DiMarco and Neal Thompson. He has a twin brother, Nico DiMarco, who is a DJ, and an older brother named Neal. After his parents divorced when he was young, he and his brothers were raised by their mother. The family adopted their mother’s maiden name, DiMarco, following the separation.
He completed his education in Maryland and earned a degree in Mathematics from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.—the only liberal arts university in the world exclusively for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. American Sign Language (ASL) is his first language, and he is highly skilled in non-verbal communication, including gesture-based communication and lip-reading.
In 2015, DiMarco publicly came out as sexually fluid. While there have been media reports linking him to relationships—including a mention of dating singer Chris Brown (which is unsubstantiated and likely inaccurate)—DiMarco has affirmed his preference to keep most personal relationship details private. In a conversation with professional dancer Sharna Burgess, he briefly mentioned a long-term relationship with a woman that lasted ten years, though he did not provide further details, emphasizing his focus on career development.
DiMarco began his career as a freelance model before being discovered through Instagram by the producers of America’s Next Top Model. Unaware of his deafness at first, they later welcomed him as the show's first deaf contestant. He went on to win the 22nd cycle of the show in 2015 at the age of 25, making history as the first deaf winner of the competition.
This victory propelled him into further public recognition. In 2016, he competed on the 22nd season of Dancing with the Stars and won the competition along with his partner, Peta Murgatroyd. His performances were widely acclaimed for their creativity and emotion—despite his ability to hear the music—showcasing his talent and determination.
Beyond modeling and reality television, DiMarco has also ventured into acting. He appeared in recurring roles on the Freeform series Switched at Birth and the Hulu comedy Difficult People. These roles complemented his advocacy by increasing deaf representation in mainstream media.
