Paul Bongiorno was raised in Ballarat, Victoria. He earned a master's degree in theology from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome and initially pursued a vocation as a Catholic priest.
In 1974, Bongiorno left the priesthood and began a career in television journalism. He worked for the Seven Network in Melbourne and later for WIN Television in Wollongong. In 1978, he joined Network Ten in Brisbane, where he served as a reporter and briefly as a weather presenter.
During his time in Brisbane, Bongiorno earned four Walkley Awards for excellence in investigative journalism. These accolades helped establish his reputation as a respected figure in Australian political journalism. In June 2014, he accepted a voluntary redundancy from Network Ten.
Since departing Network Ten, Bongiorno has remained active in journalism. He is a regular contributor to The Saturday Paper and frequently appears as a political commentator on ABC Radio National's Breakfast program. His work continues to offer analysis and insight into Australian politics.
