Peter Richard Orszag is an American economist currently serving as the CEO of Lazard, a prominent global financial advisory and asset management firm. He previously held the position of CEO of the firm's Financial Advisory division. Orszag is also Chairman of the Financial Strategy and Solutions Group and continues to share his economic insights by writing columns in respected publications, including Bloomberg.
Before joining the private sector, Orszag served as Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2010. He was also Director of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) from 2007 to 2008. Throughout his career, Orszag has contributed significantly to public policy analysis and financial strategy, earning widespread recognition within and beyond the field of economics.
Born on December 16, 1968, in Boston, Massachusetts, Peter Orszag was raised in a middle-class household. His father, Steven Orszag, was a mathematics professor at Yale University, and his mother, Reba Orszag, operated a research and development company. Raised as an only child, Orszag benefited from a nurturing and academically oriented environment.
He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and earned his undergraduate degree in economics from Princeton University in 1991. Subsequently, he attended the London School of Economics, where he completed his master’s degree and later a Ph.D. in economics. Contrary to earlier claims, he is not a graduate of New York University School of Law.
