Robert Hawking is the eldest son of the renowned physicist, cosmologist, and author Professor Stephen Hawking. He was born in 1967 to Stephen and Jane Hawking. His mother, Jane, is best known for her memoir, Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, which later inspired the Academy Award-nominated film The Theory of Everything.
Robert has two younger siblings: Lucy, born in 1970, and Timothy, born in 1979. Lucy is an accomplished novelist and English journalist. She co-authored the popular children's book George’s Secret Key to the Universe with her father and one of his former students, Christophe Galfard. Lucy studied Russian and French at the University of Oxford and has been married once. Timothy earned a degree in Spanish from Exeter University and is known for his enthusiasm for Formula One racing.
Robert Hawking pursued a career in technology and is a software engineer by profession. He currently works for Microsoft and resides in Seattle, Washington. Despite his British nationality, Robert has also lived in Canada in the past. His professional accomplishments in the field of software engineering have allowed him to maintain a relatively private but successful life in the United States.
As the eldest child, Robert played a supportive role in caring for his father, particularly because Stephen Hawking lived with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. His mother has spoken about how Robert often had to take on responsibilities beyond his years, assisting with his father’s daily needs from a young age.
Stephen Hawking maintained a strong bond with Robert. This relationship was depicted in The Theory of Everything, where actor Tom Prior portrayed Robert as a teenager and Oliver Payne portrayed him as a young child. In 2014, Robert, along with siblings Lucy and Timothy, participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to support ALS research and honor their father's ongoing battle with the disease.
