Robin Cousins was born on August 17, 1957 in Bristol. He began skating at a very young age. His first coach was Pamela Davis, who trained him from the start until his first World Championship. She also advised him on the music, technique, and fabrics. Later, he changed his trainer to Carlo Fassi and soon advanced to the senior ranks. He currently lives in Brighton with his partner. He does not reveal much about the person he married five years ago in a civil ceremony, but says that they are happy and content.
Cousins won his first national title in 1969, when he was just 12 years old. At 14, he was the British Junior Champion and also entered the international championship. He specialized in spinning in both directions and represented the UK as an amateur skater, winning the National Senior Championship for four consecutive years. In 1980, he underwent surgery on both his left and right knees. He later starred in skating shows such as Ice Capades and Holiday on Ice and regularly participated in the World Professional Championships. In 1983, he founded his own skating company, which produced programs such as Ice Majesty and Electric Ice.
From sports, Cousins made a smooth transition to stage playing in shows such as Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, The Rocky Horror Show, and Cats. He has also directed, produced, and choreographed ice spectaculars like Sleeping Beauty on Ice, Toy Story on Ice, and Holiday on Ice, as well as the movie The Cutting Edge. He has appeared as a guest anchor and commentator on BBC Sport for the Winter Olympics and the European and World Figure Skating Championships. He has been a judge on the show Dancing on Ice since 2006, and has also appeared on the game show All Star Family Fortunes in 2012 and Tipping Point in 2013.
Cousins has won many medals during his sports career as an amateur and professional ice skater. He was honored with the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1980, and his Olympic Gold medal in Figure Skating held at Lake Placid is considered to be his best performance. His back flip is popular, for which he has been entered twice into the Guinness Book of World Records.
