Sonya Nicole Hamlin is an English real estate lawyer and the former wife of Idris Elba. Idris Elba is a British actor who is well known for playing the role of Stringer Bell on HBO’s The Wire and as DCI John Luther on the BBC One series Luther. Elba also played Neslon Mandela in the biographical film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Sonya Hamlin was born in Notting Hill, London, in 1972; both her parents were immigrants, from Ghana and Sierra Leone. Sonya Hamlin was introduced to Idris Elba by his manager, who happened to be an old friend of hers from college. The pair hit it off and quickly began sharing an apartment together in Maryland. Sonya’s career was prospering (her office employed ten people) and Idris had just finished up filming of the wire. The couple fell blissfully in love and were married in a rapid fire wedding in Las Vegas.
The happiness did not last however, and Sonya filed for divorce after just four months of marriage. The couple managed to keep the wedding secret and it attracted little attention in the media. Ten years later, both Idris and Sonya agreed to talk about their break up and their “secret” marriage.
