Sophie Okonedo's career spans film, television, theatre, and audio drama. She gained early recognition for her role as Alison Cheney in the 2003 BBC webcast "Doctor Who: Scream of the Shalka," where both her voice and likeness were used for the animated character. She later returned to the "Doctor Who" universe in 2010, portraying Liz Ten in the episodes "The Beast Below" and "The Pandorica Opens."

Her television credits also include an appearance in "Clocking Off," a series created by Paul Abbott and written by Danny Brocklehurst. In 2006, she acted in the film "Stormbreaker" as Mrs. Jones and the following year played Nancy in a BBC adaptation of "Oliver Twist."

Okonedo received acclaim for her portrayal of May Boatwright in the 2008 film "The Secret Life of Bees," appearing alongside Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, and Jennifer Hudson. Her character was depicted as struggling with depression. In 2009, she played Sandra Laing in the film "Skin," a role based on a real-life South African woman of mixed heritage, co-starring Sam Neill and Alice Krige.

Her other performances include the role of Hunter in Dirk Maggs' BBC radio adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s "Neverwhere," and Ruth Younger in the 2014 Broadway revival of Lorraine Hansberry’s "A Raisin in the Sun."
